Successfully completing the source to sea expedition in 4 days running some epic whitewater puzzles along the way.

North Stein Whitewater Sickness!

The north stein is somewhat of BC epic. With around 14km of bc bushwacking and high alpine portaging in some of the most remote BC backcountry.
However... The North Stein's 1.5km of whitewater is worth every step, delivering you into the upper raches of the normal Stein fly-in run, taking a total of 4 days to complete.

This has to be on of the best multi day trips ever and is definatly worth the work to get in. Although with the 14km of pain behind you, fully loaded boats make some of the bigger drops pretty scary.

Puntledge River, Vancouver island, BC, Canada

The Puntledge river festival is held on the weekend of the 31st - 1st June in the town of Courtney on Vancouver island. It is a great river with a mix of both great low water hole play and high water wave surfing, including a fantastic "hair boating" section on the upper below the fish hatchery. The Upper Puntledge is known for its beautiful cascading "class 5" bedrock slides., but as with many surburban runs in north america is restricted to flows regulated from dams upstream. The festival is a perfect chance to go huck down some beautiful slides and falls, then surf your way into downtown Courtney and party hard at the camp site that night.... and thats what we did....

After firing up the section again and again, we watched as the water was slowly turned down after the scheduled recreational flows. Standing on the bridge wondering where to paddle next we watched as a stout line appeared to the right of the waterfalls downstream. so after a little extra motivation we decided to fire it up.

After rolling through some big cushions and diagonals you needed to stick a difficult little boof stroke in a dirty pot-hole right at the lip before dropping another 6 feet into a shallow powerfull hydrolic

Driving from the puntledge we headed south and camped near what we hoped was going to be a beautiful 35ft waterfall. with not many options to camp we pulled into a logging coupe and camped in the only available flat space. The boys all pitching in to cook up a feast that night, followed by cookies and milk, mmm yum

As many of you are now aware skippy films new project JAUNT (due for DVD release in 2009) had become the newest causalty of the current economic crisis, ie. we ran out of money and being a tight year for our sponsors also, we were forced to delay the release date till that of the north american spring season (May 2010)

The project is all but completed and the extra time made available has only enhanced the project with months more footage being added before the final mastering early 2010.

SOTA Trade show Canberra AUSTRALIA.

Despite the current economic climate this years 2009 SOTA (Snow & Outdoor Trade Association) Trade show was great for all involved.
This year as last, I represented kayak4play as the importer of fluid kayaks in Australia. Despite falling numbers in attendance, the buyers were there for business. The Fluid kayaks range growing in interest from last year, as many an interested buyer would haggle me over the features of the product and price, all walking away impressed at what the 2009 range had to offer. Leigh manning the K4P Booth also had a great deal of interest in the Astral, Immersion Research, H2o Paddle and Heliconia Press range of products. Picking up some exciting new dealers for the Australian consumers.

Despite all the business talk and negotiations, when it came close to the end of the day, everybody was only interested in one thing…free beer…
It Just so happens that the Fluid solo Expedition fits 3 cases of beer in the back + Ice (not that I would know…) Drawing a very dedicated crowed including the editors of CUMEC and outer edge magazine, paddle sports Australia and many more keen to be part of the action…

The 2008 festival was a great hit with paddlers from all across North America, Australia, and Great Britain joining in on the action packed weekend. The festival featured a Down River Race through the middle canyon of the Clearwater River and a rodeo on “Little Pink” not to mention one of the best festival after parties .... PERIOD!

Norway- Just a taste

Colin Furmston, a fellow fluid kayaks team paddler and close mate, has just rolled around my house after a successful season paddling in norway, one of the best paddling destination our water cover planet has to offer. Brief update from the beautiful sea to sky in BC. Had a couple of days to make our way out to the Skookumchuck tidal narrows near Egmont for a good 12.5 knot tide. Although not at its peak, It still provided us with some good mid season relief from the big rubber busses we had been pushing down the clearwater river for the past few months and a chance to get back into the play boat before flying to africa.

Helmecken Falls Hucking

Adrian Kiernan, Dropping lower Mertel falls

On friday 1st AUG, 2 Months to the day since Ben Earle passed away. Mike and myself made plans to abseil into the base of helmeckan in the Wells Grey Park and run the falls directly below the base. Helmeckan falls is some 2 1/2 times the size of Niagra Falls in eastern Canada, resulting in some serious weather conditions at the base for our 2 man paddling crew.

With the assistance of 2 close friends we reppeled down into the basin with our kayaks and cameras in hand. On the right bank, we prepared all our gear before subjecting ourselves to the onslaught of the river left, more exposed bank. Leaving our crew in the shelter of the right for photo's we made the ferry accross the mertal river, above the first unrannable drop, directly below the falls we intended on running.

Climing the bank on the lefts steep, slippery and very exposed bank, we made progress towards the base of helmeckan falls and the basin in which we would launch from up high out of the mist into the sun covered lower canyon.

The progress was slow and at times we were required to crawl on all fours with kayakes to avoid slipping into the raging pool below. The wind at the base felt hurrican force as mike slipped into his kayak and waited patiently in the eddy above while i set up my camera lower down stream to capture the drop.

Helmeckan falls, was so large in the viewfinder of my sony HD camera, that it bairly fitted in the lower quarter of the falls, and with every second passed, my lense would be covered in horizontally blown spray.

Mike cleaned the drop, which was estimated at some 30+ft. Following behind him, i too launched, into the mist, a totally surreal feeling as i watched the lower george appear before my eyes into the glittering sunlight.

Kayaking Tragedy- Lessons Learned and River Safety

Last week, i watched as my best friend and amazing boater Ben Earle got vertically pinned and stuffed under a log. I watched as he struggled for air before drowning right in front of my eyes. Its is an experience i will never forget till my dyeing day.

What it made me realize is the number of people in the whitewater community over the years whom both Ben and i have paddled with, who have had no rescue training what so ever. It is very disappointing indeed We have paddled with some of the best boaters, whom i grew up watching on videos only to find out that in the field of river safety where completely ignorant

Fistly my advice to ANYBODY who plans to paddle on moving water is to take the time to attend a rescue course. these courses are available in many forms depending on where in the world you live, but the most common being Swiftwater Rescue Technician (SRT)

They are designed to give river users techniques and skills that could potentially save their own life or sombody around them.

All my creeking companions hold rescue certification and the skills they have, on more than one occasion, have saved my life and i have saved theirs. It is a skill that we should all have and practice regularly.

Ask yourself this, ... could you live with yourself watching your friend or family member drown, knowing that there are skills you could have had, which may have saved their life?!?

...I know that i could not live with myslef....

Ben's situation was a very complicated one, and i am at peace that i tried everything i could.

Throwbags come in many shapes and sizes, get one and learn how to use it. I guarantee that if you paddle long enough you will likely save more than one life during your career

On every paddling trip at least one breakdown paddle should be carried and all boats fitted with stern float bags.
Carabiners are an important tool on any rescuers arsinal, they can be used to attach rope to either the boat, anchor or towline of a rescue PFD.

It is very important that any carabiner that is exposed on your pfd (ie. not in a pocket) is a locked. locking carabiner should be screwed closed so as not to clip onto anything else on the river.

QUICK-LOCK- a good option for cow tails where they may need to be unlocked quickely and lock instantly after letting it go.

SCREW GATE- Is a great option as part of a rescue kit and the best option if you plan yo carry them on the outside of your PFD.

QUICK- CLIP- Not a bad option when left in the back of your boat. They should never be left exposed on your PFD

Knife's come in all shapes and sizes, and they are a must when carreying rope of any description. Saw's are also a good option when paddling creeks
I urge you to think very strongly about the following point. To understand what i am talking about, Wedge your kayak in-between the chair and bench on your local picnic table, climb in and put your deck on.

Now try and get out without using your hands, it can be virtually impossible.

Above is a picture of the foot-block on my Fluid solo, Note that the center pillar has notches in it which act as steps to assist in getting yourself out using nothing but your legs
This is an example of another company's foam center pillar. Those of you who tried getting out of your boat and have a foam pillar similar, you will understand that it is impossible. If your boat does not have steps, try sculpting them out of foam or replace your boat completely. there are many company's out there who's creek boats have this feature, i urge you to chose one of them and convince your friends to do the same

Above is a picture of two types of rescue vests. There are many on the market and everybody who intends on paddling on creeks should own one with a harness. there are many points to be made regarding the PFD, but you MUST make sure that your river knife and quick release are as close to the center of your torso as possible. This provides you with the best possible chances to utilize them should you be pinned and the water forcing your hands away from your body

For those of you who knew Ben, you knew that he took river safety very seriously. Even those who didn't know him personally, i urge you to do one thing for him while it is fresh in your mind. Please take off your next weekend from boating and instead attend a rescue course with your friends, chat about what you would do in a desperate situation and go over your river signals. Then get back out their and Huck your meat safely.

I just finished one yesterday, i could not think of anywhere i would rather be after his funeral than scrubbing up on the skills that he was so very competent at. I owe my life to his skills on more than one occasion and for that i will never forget.

Fatal Kayaking Accident - Ben Earle

Friends and Paddling Community,

As i'm sure many of you are now already aware. Ben Earle, Age 25, Drowned while kayaking down a creek in BC - Canada

On Sunday ben and i put on to Finn Creek, Within the first 1km Ben was sucked underneath a log that was not visible from the waters surface and unable to pull his skirt. Many attempts to rescue him failed and after 30mins I had to leave to call 911.

After 2 and a half days of rescue attempts by the search and rescue (Many of them Ben's close personal friends), managed to pull Ben, and the boat he was paddling out. Ben sustained no major injuries and close relatives and friends have had the chance to go and visit him before being cremated. A service will be held for him in his canadian home of Clearwater- BC on Saturday.

Ben died doing something he loved, exploring a new river. He died not due to a fatal mistake of judgment or going outside his more than capable paddling ability. He was simply claimed by a log that he could not see, even after standing directly in front of it to scout, unawares of the danger lurking beneath the surface. A tragic incident indeed.

Ben Earle is Probably the most competent and experienced river user i know. Growing up in Tasmania Australia, he was exposed to the way of life that came with running rivers at an early age compared to many. In a relatively short time he has rafted and kayaked all over the world and introduced hundreds if not thousands of people to the joys of the river. He was a sponsored paddler for fluid kayaks and WRSI helmets and a great contributer to river safety in the paddling community. He was one of the key organisors of the clearwater river festival and is a devastating loss to the paddling community in general, not to mention his his family and friends.

I do not wish to leave to many details of the incident here, but if anybody would like further information on the incident, updates on service arrangments or to be put in touch with any of Ben's family and friends, I will do my best to bring you into the loop.

SOTA Trade Show - Kayak4play & Fluid kayaks

After my Breif visit to sydney for the Australian Freestyle Nationals i jumped on a plane and headed south to meet up with leigh (K4P) to help out on the both at the annual SOTA trade show.

There was HUGE amount of interest in the fluid kayaks range (http://www.fluidkayaks.com/) especially the "element", fluids new surf boat. It should be a huge hit over here in Australia with shops lining up to be part of the "user-friendly" surf kayak revolution!

As always the Immersion research, H2O paddle and Astral PFD Range, created strong interest. Their new product ranges bringing paddle comfort together with the normal bomb-proof quality products and affordable pricing which has kept them favorites for years now.

The Australian importer Leigh Wighton from kayak4play in Tasmanian was there to help out with technical advice on products and pricing while i was busy chatting up a storm at the fluid tent, However this was after spending the first morning trying to unlock the boats from his roof rack after screwing up a borrowed combination lock.....stupid.

...So much for "helping"....

Australian Junior Freestyle Champion: James Rolo charging to victory in the finals!

A great weekend was had by all with 28 competitors. It was great to see that half of these competitors were juniors. The junior men's was held on Jack's with James Rowlinson placing first followed by Declan Czajkowski in second and Morgan James in third.The junior women's event was held on the wave just above last drop (no name) and was won by Emily Kaar followed up by Avril Moore in second placing.By lunch time Saturday the seniors still did not have a suitable feature although we had been working on Fryer for the past couple of weeks we could not get it back to a good feature. Luckily there was a stopper just behind Fryer which was upsetting the rafts and they turned the water ... we immediately set to with some alterations to the bollards and when the water was turned back on we had a great feature to run the senior K1 events on. A good steep wave that we classed as unobtainable and so we set forth on the prelims for the rest of Saturday.Sunday started with finals of K1 with the following placings,

Our only Women's K1 contender was Christine Haylock, a new arriver to our shores but willing competitor, who has flown off to Darwin with a gold to start her new job. Good luck Christine.C1 and OC1 were held on Jack's with a few trying the single paddle for the first time in comp.C1 placings were

OC1: 1st Liam Corr with the other places going to Jez Balnchard, James Rowlinson and Russ Boza to work out with their unique styles of competing.Even though the weather was a little cold, wet and windy a great time was had by all and we were pleased with the turnout.I would like to thank the following sponsors who donated to the prizes over the weekend.Feed the Rat, Cumec magazine, Wetspot, Enrtopy Gear, Dagger Kayaks, Lounge Kayaker & Wavemonkey.And a really big thank you for Jez Blanchard who took on the role a MC for most of the weekend and has been encouraging the junior development at Penrith along with Mark Hammer and Liam Corr as well as everyone else who helped in the organization and setting up for the event.We also had the NSW premier of Downunder the Horizonline on Saturday night which was a great night for all. (some were still feeling the effects on Sunday well into the comp)We should have some video up on Lounge Kayaker soon and some pics in Cumec mag sometime in the future so keep a lookout for them.Otherwise thanks to everyone for making it a great weekend and hopefully we can have some more events in the future.

Music will have a heavy influence on the kayaking film by the crew of three from Australia calling themselves ‘Skippy Films’. Their feature ‘Downunder the Horizonline’ will be available in Spring 2008 via The Heliconia Press.

Skippy Films also has teamed up with long time film distributor The Heliconia Press. The three Australian budding film makers have exploded onto the film scene after taking their cameras all over the world throughout the past year.

just letting you know the the lea extreme race is on again in my home state of tasmania, Australia
This has to be one of tasmania's premier creeks and a world class festival by any standards. Although not always huge volume of competitors make the trip down to tasmania, the calliber of competition is deffinatly world class.
The lea is a class 4 creek set to tasmania's north which runs on a regular basis.. rain dependant. it contains many drop's including a 3 meters drop with a very solid lead-in called "Screaming plastic surgen" whish is usually the highlight of any race real's carnage!

welcome back! sorry to have been out of order so long. computer motherboards seem to be very temporary things!!!

well after about 6 weeks back at work paying the bills, i teamed up with kim ward from gravity distribution (fluids BC dealer) for a mission down the norrish creek. The norrish is a clean grade 4 creek situited just outside abbortsford. pictures are worth 1000 words so ill leave you with a million words. there are also some pics of upper silver hope at high spring runoff. the lower appears to have changed due to a landslide so there is a first decent to be done on 4 linked drops.- watch this space...

so, the chilliwack is now pumping with spring run-off and we are portaging clients around the big rapid tamahi. Its the best time of the rafting season but it has been very busy. i finally got a full day off to kick around the cabin at cultus lake. russel and i finally pulled out the old windsurfer and put it together.

Day 1 Open Mens on Bussy!

Well official procedings kicked of today with all the open mens competitors and OC1 getting their first rides done. You were allowed 1 practice ride and then 4 competition rides. The highest two rides are scored. For many competitors their training ride was their 5th ever time on bussy (for 5-paddlers it was their first ever time!). For most of the North-Americans however, it became what a halfpipe is to skiiers, a huge bowl and ramp with the ability to launch massive air. The punishment for failing however was the beating of your life. All the aussie paddlers put up a good showing but Anthony yap however taking the day throwing a MASSIVE kay-y and panam's left and right to put him in the top 5 with 132.67 The winning ride however was that of Nick Troutman with a huge 185.00

Bus eater is in...and its HUGE! The air up for grabs is crazy. with 3ft available just from falling of the crest of the wave...and the beat-down...oh the beat-down! Its really quite hard to use and for most of the competitors it is the first time they have surfed the wave. This provided for some quite entertaining training runs with all competitors getting 3 or 4 rides before competition tomorrow. That meant that with no idea of where the sweet spot on the wave is, you would fly down the face, pop the biggest move possible and hope you landed near the wave! many people simply landing back near the tow-line or in my case, in the pit...before being swollowed by the seam between mini and big bus.

I made it up at 5am today to get a morning surf in on an extremely low leval bussy (big hole!). Arriving in the eddy there were over 20boaters there to meet me. I missed the rope once and through maybe 4-moves before being swollowed by a angry bussy surge on my second ride...ouch. It was now 7:45 and official training started @ 8. There were now over 35boaters in the eddy....and 20 on the bank waiting for their training slot!!!

So, Fluids new project the nemisis has just come fresh out of the mold with the first two production boats being tested today. They have definatly come out trumps with this one! The boat has an un-natural hull speed for its length, Heaps of Pop and sweet carving rails. looking foward to using it on bussy no end. Seth Chapell, Celliers Kruger and Myslef headed up the river today to get some shots of boat No. 1 & 2

Dont take my word for it, some of north-america's top paddlers have been saying that its the best boat on the market today....sweet

So with a poor water leval on the ottawa and busy eddy line-ups. So with Kelsey Thompson, Jon Best and "Pringle".we made our way down to a premium leval innercity strife wave. On arrival, there were only 2 other paddlers there and they both moved on shortly after we arrived. we had definatly picked the best playspot in north america that day and to think...no eddy trafic! we were joined by Dustin Urban who put his own north-american spin to the wave.

So after kicking back the last few days we spent a proper session down the middle channel, taking our time to surf on all the waves on the way down. They are unfortunatly at that in-between leval and there is nothing big and bouncy on the river to train on. But there is always the bar in the evenings! Aparently bussy does not come in till 14ft and higher. The level is @ 9.5ft but we hear they are trying to fill the reserve upstream of us so as to try and garantee water for the event. Hopefully it ill be full in a couple of days time.

well not much happend today. Just waiting and hoping for sun and snowmelt. The boys got on the river today and paddled down the Main channel from Bus Eater down. Nothing of note...

I opted out of the on-water missions to meet a bloke about a house. Thanks very much Bryan who has surplied some of the fluid boys with a warm house (did i mention it was warm?)

anyways -am having a ball breaker tomorrow with any luck. lots of boating...i wonder if my fingers will fall of?? huh...will see...

So laim and i flew into ottawa late last night. stayed at a hostle. Erin was kind enough to pick us up and along with lachie we drove up to Wilderness Tours to check in for the 2007 WORLDS! Quickly dropping their kit, lachie, liam and james grabbed boats and trudged through the snow to the river. Liam and james meeting their freestyle hero's Patrick Camblin and Rush Sturges at bus Eater...unfortunatly the level is still to low due to it still friggin SNOWING! Im sure a couple of days rain or sun will bring the river up enough. It is currently 10.5 ish. anyways...ill get on the river when my boat arrives and the sun is out and the water is warm....well...dreaming!

Fear Canyon - Lynn Vally Falls, BC Canada

So, Liam Corr, one of the australian junior Freestyle paddlers also heading over to the worlds, joined me for what was to be a week boating in BC before flying to Ottawa. After some complications at the airport, he arrived 3 days late. cutting our boating time in half...sad... but atleast we got all the bad sh*#t out of the way at the start of the trip! With a large time limitation, we drove liam directly from the airport to a nice BC Classic creek run, Fear Canyon on the upper Elaho. Not a bad way to start a trip!! After a pretty solid swim, he finished the run unscathed and in good spirits...not many pics of the run (fingers too cold to push buttons on cameras!!) we then spent the next 2 days snowboarding in whistler and scouting out a few falls for next time before returning to vancouver for our flight...BC i will be back!!!

Ok, so im now very very bankrupt, and flying to canada, and have no work for a month and bit...why?
Because its the friggin worlds... thats why!...live life...

well im now in Taiwan getting ready to head to vancouver for a week of paddling at skookumchuck and creeking, then its off to the ottawa river for the worlds on the scariest wave i have seen...bus eater & gladiator! I cant wait!

I ordered a soup yesterday for dinner...determined that i was going to try authetic Taiwanise food, i walked into the only resteraunt that had no english on the menus. ordered by number a dish which had a very short title...i figured that a short name ment that is was plain and simple!

when it arrived at my table the waiter gave me a "your not going to actually eat that are you!" look and proceded to stab the live octapus with a short fat metal knife. now dead...he left me to eat it. the flavor of the soup was great...kind of like miso and hot....but the now recently dead octapus just couldnt seem appealing! There were also rosted grasshoppers on a plate next to it (they are not to bad...tried them in uganda...salty)

Anyways, looking forward to getting some great footage to share with everybody back home!

With last years record of 13hours in a fiberglass boat and 17 hours in a creek boats of a full decent on the mighty franklin river. My mates Robin and George headed down the ditch to compete with the shamefully slow record to create our own kick arse time of 4 days. It was our chance to complete a cruisy trip through tasmania's amazingly beautifull scenery and untouched west coast wilderness of the Gorden - Franklin River World Heritage area. It was my last chance to catch up with my buddies from home before setting of oversaes once again and also my chance to drink copious quantaties of sambuca for my birthday

So after escaping penrith and driving over 2500km both ways, im home writing about the good surf and an wasome week boating with the boys..and girls and havin a damn good time.
The surf gods were good to us for selection and everybody at selections were throwing down somthing HUGE, it was great to watch. Firstly to announce the Australian Team to reprisent at the freestyle worlds on Bus Eater- Canada

What else is there to do in penrith when the pumps are off ?? and with rain in the catchment of the Napean River, colin ryan and i missioned of to make the most of the rain and get on the first river in a long time. For Ryan it was the first river since the Zambezi some 6months ago.

Wow, I never thought i would say this, but am i ever glad to be back at penrith! This past 10 months have been a blur of kayaking, partying and adventures. unfortunatly though, this has left me extremely bankrupt and now im back working for the man again, paying off my debts...untill next season.

TASMANIA - Australia

It appears to be common knowledge that Australia, with the exception of a small amount of water in queensland, is a boaters nightmere, with very little water all year round. this is true, but i think most boaters need to pull out their maps of the world and pay a little attention to the small island down to the south eas. Tasmania, the place where i was born, learnt to kayak and still return to for awsome whitewater between working seasons. yes, it is part of australia and yes it has both whitewater and gradient to boot. although it is still rainfall dependant during winter offers a host of classy creeks and fun intermadiate paddling.

2 years ago, the cateract extreme race was born, in addition to Tasmania's Lea River Extreme Race. Support for the race was withdrawn last year due to lack of support from 'Hydro', Tasmania's governing water body. This year, it returned with a bang, doubling the number of competitors from the last event to a whopping 68 paddlers, with in excess of 3,000 spectators lining the banks for the head to head race on day 2.

The race kicked of with a time trial racing alongside your partner. The winners of that were best placed in the head to head heats to make the final on day 2. My partner, Colin Furmston, and i, raced relitively unscathed for 5th place besides both being "toasted" in the toaster.

The party that night was a typical paddlers piss-up, besides the bouncers, dj and swiming pool. It came with your usual nudie runs, excessive beer consuption and free-style move description break dancing! Colin and i redeaming ourselves slightly being the final people to cross the finish line that night (and also last to arrive at the paddlers breif the next morning!) My trusty solo being a huge hit with the masses in saving the beer brought from home, from the clutches of the evil bouncers, commited to making us buy drinks at the outdoor bar...and take over the world. Apparently our trusty bouncers are not trained for 10 kayakers running into the lake with a kayak full of beer, simply to continue drinking whilst floating. huh...who would have thought?!?!

Cateract gorge is a popular run located only 5 mins from the city center in Tasmania's northern capital of Launceston. The South Esk river boasts some amazing class 4- 5ish standard kayaking and during high water Tasmania's best big water run. (hotly debated)

r left. Tasmania's very own Dan Hall taking the honours for second year running, with Ben Maynard taking a close second place, spured on im sure, by the thousands of fellow Tasmanians yelling support from the walkway. Who ever heard of that many spectators for a non-olympic event?

Lakka Bru = Sweet as bro

After bumping into a couple of really good South African dudes at christmas festivities on the lemon, my time here in uganda is rapidly approaching its end. After pretty much the best introduction to kayaking from both steve fisher and myself, the two SA could possibly get (learning to roll in the eddy next to nile special) i have convinced them to head home and buy themselves a "REAL" boat and support their south afican home-boys. As i fly out of Entebbe for Johanasburg, Alysha will make here way back over the border into Kenya with our new souid aufrican bru's to work the remainder or her break in an orphanage. maybe some people on this planet will give back what they take....but after learning to kayak i dont know that i could EVER give back anything nearly as good as boating!!! Sad as hell to say good bye on New years...safe travels

After Spending almost all my time either on the river or destroying myself at "nile liver destroyers". I put aside some time to attempt to make my existance on this earth slighly more usefull. As alysha and i had just returned from Nairobi a few days before, we went out on the road and helped out as best as water babies flailing to get back in water can...Soft Power Health was founded by popular femal paddler Jessie Stone to help fight the large amount of malaria that affects almost 99% or ugandas pouulation. As Jessie had to unfortunatly head back home to the USA and christmas holidays were rapidly approaching we spent 5 fulldays on the task before returning to the water...

Really good times... getting out in the community....turns out boating is not (quite) everything...

"Getting the chance to work on the chilko is something that every guide would die for", Randy one of the owners of HYAK told me when he presented me with the idea of letting me work as the safety kayaker for his trips later that season.

I must say i was stoked to be going, but i really had no idea about the river at all untill i joined the first of 4, 6day expedition trip on the morning of camp 2 just outside of chilko lake. From there i got my first tast of 1st class chilko fun entering bidwell canyon and the whitemile around midday with some huge standing waves and pushy big water fun. I can not really express the nature of the river to anybody reading through my words but being given the oppertunity to work this river has definatly been the rafting highlight of my BC Trip and an almost spiritual event being beside such an amazing river for nearly 1 whole month with such awsome dudes as 'Buzz' lightyear, Dylan and Normond. thanks for such awsome trips. it was my pleasure working with you.....despite the eggs...buzz!

FREE FLOWING RIVERS

Just letting everybody know, i have been working alongside some close friends at HYAK to get a river race organised for our new Not-for-profit organisation 'free flowing rivers'. it will be the opening event in an ongoing fundrasing effort to raise money for an 11month road trip from canada down as far as chile in south america to make a documentry on some of the major rivers that are under threat from Hydro eletrical dam proposals. For example the futulafu in chile.
We have been offered some high powered sponsorships already and are looking for all the help we can get to make our dream a reality. If you know somebody who might be able to help us out for this international event, in the awesome land of OZ let me know.

OH YEAH.
i FINALLY got there!! after attending the ashlu river festival i bumped into a couple of sheep shagging boys from new zealend, Hamish and Roger. instantly hitting it off with our southern antics we made the mission up to skooks happen, hiring boats and making the 2 1/2 hour pilgremidge up to egmont. we paddled out early on the outgoing tide hoping to catch some last minute skooks action, it was not to be, forcing us to fall asleep in the hot sun for 8 hours slowly watching the tide turn and growing steadily more excited as the wave quickly began to build. 11 knots is meant to be the critical number but we had struck it at 14.3 which ment for bigger than normal airtime and also bigger than normal DOWN time in the huge whirlpools directly behind the wave. i was luckey enough not to have to go on tour through them the whole 2 days we were there but hamish racked up 11 (12 if you count trying to ride 'Tube steak' the large barreling wave further out in the channel and getting substantially beaten!)

Aint no donkey flips here colin!! airscrews the flavour of the day for pretty much every boater willing to huck!!

paddling with us was some pretty amazing boaters from the states. a jackson sponsored pro-boater, and ex member of World class kayak accadamy and also a very tall, very crazy "Fluid' Boater called Leath, who kept us all entertained with his outrageoues humour and mullet

yea ha... after doing nothing but getting beaten in my creekboat on runs way over my head4 the last 4 months. The frog wave has finally emerged at low water on the thompson to remind me why im a kayaker!!! Its pretty much the biggest wave i have every surfed, all moves are possible on it. Between me, kumsheen and some washington boys the wave has been getting used and abused to the pleasure of every boater in the eddy!!! finally getting to practice Helix's on a good size river wave (better than sex baby!!!)

California returns.
Ok, so after keeping in contact with my cool Californian chick from Hawaii. I got a visit from her and her friend for a week. I borrowed a car from one of my mates at HYAK. And picked them up from the airport. we spent the rest of the day floating about Stanley park before we all headed back to Chilliwack as I had to work the next day. As it always is at HYAK the Saturday was controlled chaos. I safety kayaked for the second trip, Maggie and Jamie helped out with lunches and made friends with the ‘locals’ (It Turns out not all Canadians live in igloos) that night we went out drinking and the local pub, unfortunately Jamie, being too young to drink in Canada was restricted entry to the local club. Instead we all trooped up to Caltus Lake and continued festivities there. That night I’m sure will remain in my memories for a long time, and not because of anything I did (incase you were wondering). Over the next 2 days we drove up to whistler and had a look around, my first chance to see Canada outside of HYAK working areas. Watched ‘pirates of the Caribbean’ ate sushi, drunk cider and admired the scenery. Despite being a JAFA (just another fucking Aussie) in this town, I can understand why Aussies are drawn to it. Much fun had and much alcohol drunk…… after whistler we headed home to give Paul’s car back and bummed a lift back into Vancouver for the remainder of their stay. Jamie hooked up with an Aussie guy who had spent time living down near Geavston in Tassie. Thanks again to the BEAVER bar in Samsun hostel, entertainment for the evening was blurred to say the least.
Very sad to see them go especially as I am now back in Chilliwack drinking coffee at Tim Horton’s facing another days work tomorrow.

(baught some elbow guards today and have a Full face helmet on the shelf at FNA waiting for me when i get back to sillywack)

puntledge slides on vancouver island...biggest was well over 100ft and on a 45 deg incline. super fun and pretty dam easy. just no room for errors. was paddling with cory bucks and some other local boys who are amazing paddlers. we started the run with 8 paddlers, only 4 finished. broken nose, dislocated shoulder...shitty stuff like that

Arriving in hawaii after a pretty big night in kings cross, my liver only got more angry at me. for a 5 day period i did nothing but sight see, drink, lay in the sun, drink, swim and generally have an awasome time. after bumping into a super cool chic, maggie from calafornia i was convinced to head to north shore which was supposed to be a releif from the glitz of waikiki beach. there i bummped into another bunch of really cool people. the photoes are mostly from north shore. NOTE- some of the photos are blurred, but thats ok...its how i remember the night
